What To Look for When You Sell Gold Online by Mark Etinger

Before you sell gold online, there are a few guidelines you should follow. Unfortunately there are quite a few sites out there that are not trustworthly, so in order to find the perfect site for all your needs, and one that will really pay you cash for gold, you need to watch out for the bad websites.

Once you find a good site, however, it will be easy to sell jewelry. I know it sounds a little far-fetched, but it's not. These sites will take your gold and really pay you cold hard cash. Gold buyers take everything from real gold and platinum to even junk gold. Of course, the purer your materials, the more cash for gold you will receive.

First off, it's important that you find a company that is bonded and insured. This is going to be more for your benefit than the company's. Bonded means that the business has secured funds (controlled by the state) that are available to customers for claims against the company as mandated by state law. You also wanted an insured company, which means that if something does go wrong, the individual won't be held accountable — instead, the company's insurance will be liable. Beyond all that, being insured and bonded is a form of business etiquette and professionalism. If a site doesn't offer bonded and insured claims, move on to a new site that does.

Second off, it's important that you find a site that offers pre-paid postage. If a site can't afford to send you the customer a pre-paid package or envelope for your gold, chances are they either aren't a legit company or they just don't care about the customer.

I'm pretty partial to sites that do care about the customer and have good customer care. Which bring us to the third point — make sure you contact the company before you sell gold online. It's important that they are available for your questions and that they generally provide reliable customer support. A site with zero support is a site not worth working with.

Next, make sure the company has been around for a while and that they have no complaints against them. Even if the company behind a cash for gold site is new, the actual enterprise may not be. All you have to do is look online and on forums to find out if a company is safe to work with or not. Consumers will be glad to report whether a site is or is not trustworthy, how reasonable its rates are, etc.

Lastly, make sure the site has either a guarantee or "cooling off" period. This allows you to take some time to think about whether the rates they are offering for your jewelry is enough enough cash for gold for you. That being said, it's important to be realistic. If you send a website something like scrap metal and they offer you 75% at 5 to 10 ounces, this is actually a pretty darn good rate. On the other hand, if a site offers the same pricing for a pure metal like 24K gold, you should take your business elsewhere. Congratulations, you're now ready to sell your jewelry!
